Understanding OD and Heavy Haul



In order to avoid permitted freight, you will want to make sure that your commodity and truck are under the following thresholds:


Weight: 80,000 pounds

Height: 13 ½ feet

Width: 8 ½ feet

Length: 75 feet



Depending on your shipment size, permits can take several days or even up to a few weeks to acquire from each state. This can and will drastically affect your shipment timing and routing. In fact, many states don’t allow oversize shipments to travel during weekends and restrict travel on holidays as well.

Weather is also a major contributing factor as some states have the power to cancel your permit due to current weather conditions. Heavy freight may have issues with roads along the way, some roads can’t withstand the weight of an oversized shipment. When transporting a tall shipment, you must now factor in bridges and other low hanging obstacles like power lines. These types of shipments would require route surveys to be conducted prior to transport.
